Wall-E Movie Review

Wall-E Movie

Read more about: Wall-E is the story of a garbage collecting robot, left alone on planet earth after all of its inhabitants have abandoned the planet for new civilization in space. He faithfully collects and disposes of the never-ending trash. Day after day, he works alone until a mysterious white robot named Eve arrives.

Wall-E and Eve become friends until suddenly Eve shuts down. Then one day, a ship comes and takes Eve away. Devastated, Wall-E hitches a ride on the ship determined to save his friend.

The ship arrives on a space cruise ship where humans now live a lazy and gluttonous existence. Soon, iit becomes clear that Eve was sent to Earth to see if there is any possibility of sustainable life. In a series of conflicts, the new fate of the planet Earth is to be decided.

I’ll say one thing, the robots were cute. They’re back and forth “Wall-E” and “Ev-a” was adorable as these non-human forms fall in love before our eyes. Even the story was compelling enough, but the “beat iit over your head” lifestyle and environmental messages were too much. Everything was to the extreme. Earthlings of the future are wasteful, are grossly overweight and don’t engage in any type of physical activity. Now, one might say that the message is made plain so kids can catch it, but I think when kids are old enough to get it, they don’t need the overdone message. Give us all a bit of credit for being able to use our noggins.

Familiar voices in the movie include: Fred Willard, John Ratzenberger and Sigourney Weaver.

Step Brothers Movie Review – Will Ferrell

Step Brothers MovieStep Brothers is the story of two unemployed thirty-somethings who still live with their parents. Will Ferrell plays Brennan Huff whose mother (Mary Steenburgen) marries the father of Dale Doback (John C. Reilly). The two “kids” instantly hate each other and constantly fight, which isn’t helped by the fact that these two immature adults have to share a bedroom.

Things start to turn around when Brennan’s brother (Adam Scott) visits. Ultra-successful and completely obnoxious, Brennan despises his brother even more than Dale. And when Dale punches Brennan’s brother and makes out with his the brother’s wife, Brennan starts to realize that Dale isn’t so bad.

Eventually, the boys’ parents tire of Brennan and Dale’s laziness and trouble making and cut them off. They have to go out and find jobs and in the process, they find themselves.

The movie was hilarious and very well done. As a fan of Will Ferrell, I was glad to see he finally put together a great movie with two solid lead characters. Ferrell’s portrayal of Brennan was on par with the hilarity of Old School’s “Frank the Tank”. Much better than the contrived and non-believable characters in the recent Blades of Glory and Semi-Pro.

Both Reilly and Ferrell played the adults who never grew up perfectly. My favorite scene was during the first family dinner. As the boys at their dinosaur nuggets and drank their sugary drinks the fun begins. I suddenly had visions of my own kids still at home in their 30s they played it so well.

Definitely worth seeing!

X-Files: I Want to Believe Movie Review

X-Files: I Want to Believe

X-Files: I Want to Believe has Scully (Gillian Anderson) & Mulder (David Duchovny) back working with the FBI when several women remains are found in rural Virginia and a priest (Billy Connolly) begins seeing visions pertaining to the murders. In addition, an FBI agent also appears to be one of the victims.

I was never a regular X-Files TV series watcher and have only seen a handful of episodes, but this movie felt like one long episode. The story was interesting, but not particularly compelling and eventually a little bit ridiculous. But I can’t tell you much more or I’ll spoil it for ya.

The Love Guru Movie Review

The Love Guru

The Love Guru is the story of Pitka (Mike Myers), an American raised by gurus in India. Pitka grows up and returns to America to become a self-help guru. He is soon hired by Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba), owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, to mend the relationship between a star player and his estranged wife, so the team can get back on track to the playoffs.

The movie is full of funny moments, but sometimes I felt a little guilty for laughing. The comedy is vulgar and crass, so if you like that type of thing (ummm…confession…I do) and you can tolerate some of the purely stupid (and unfunny) moments, it’s worth watching.

Justin Timberlake plays well-endowed French Canadian goalie, Jacques Grande who is having an affair with the estranged wife and he’s hilarious. Another humorous and very likable performance is delivered by Manu Narayan who plays Pitka’s assistant Rajneesh. In fact, he’s a whole lot funnier than Myers himself.

The movie also includes cameos from Kanye West, Jessica Simpson, Mariska Hargitay and Deepak Chopra.

What Furniture to Put in a Newborn's Nursery

Newborn Baby NurseryIf you feel overwhelmed by all the baby stuff for sale, take heart. A newborn’s needs are pretty simple. There’s no need to spend a fortune to get the nursery ready for baby. Here are the basic furniture needs:

  • Crib and mattress
  • Change table: Get one with drawers and you won’t likely need a separate dresser.
  • Bassinet: This isn’t absolutely necessary, but comes in handy for the first few weeks, especially if you want to keep baby close in your bedroom.
  • Bath tub: Just a simple plastic baby tub will do it…you don’t need all the bells and whistles.
  • Diaper pail: Again, it doesn’t need to be fancy. Just a place to dispose of diapers if you’re using disposables.
  • Baby monitor: Know the instant baby is crying anywhere in the house.
  • Baby swing: This is a luxury, but a very handy one to keep baby calm while you get a few things done around the house.
  • Play mat: Also another luxury, but as baby start to explore with her eyes and hands, soft play mats with hanging toys are great for little ones.
  • Lamp: An overhead light in a room can be harsh. Choose a soft lamp for night time wake ups, so baby can get back to sleep easily.

A Newborn Baby's Travel Needs & Supplies

Baby TravelHaving a newborn doesn’t mean you have to be house bound. There are plenty of convenient ways to get out and about with baby. Here are some of the basics you might want to purchase:

  • Infant car seat: Required for car travel.
  • Stroller: Ensure it is safe for newborns. You can even purchase stroller / car seat combinations that make it easy to go from car to foot.
  • Diaper bag: A large bag is a must for carrying baby and mommy essentials. Most diaper bags come with space for bottles, small and large items and include a change mat.
  • Baby Wrap or Carrier: Hold baby close and keep your hands free with a wide variety of available baby carriers. They’re great for getting out of the house and working around the house too.
  • Playpen / Portable Crib: If your heading out overnight or for an extended day trip, a place for baby to sleep always comes in handy.

A Newborn's Medicine Cabinet

Baby Medical SuppliesAs you welcome new baby home, you’ll likely need to stock up and add new items to your medicine cabinet. Consult your doctor for any special medical needs your baby might need, but here are some basic items you might like to include:

  • Infant Liquid Tylenol
  • Antibiotic Cream
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Sunscreen (hypoallergenic & fragrance free, but keeping baby out of the sun is better)
  • Band-Aids and Gauze Pads
  • Tape for Gauze
  • Tweezers
  • Nasal Aspirator
  • Ear Syringe
  • Digital Thermometer

Again, those are the basics to get you started. Check with your doctor for further recommendations.

A Newborn Baby's Starter Linens

Baby LinenA newborn requires a wide variety of essentials, including linens, blankets and things.

Here are some handy and must-have essentials that you’ll want to stock for your baby’s linen closet:

  • Receiving blankets: These thin and relatively small blankets serve a wide variety of purposes. From swaddling your newborn to burping and wiping spit up, these are definite must-have for parents of a new baby.
  • Face cloths: Little itty bitty facecloths are perfect for wiping spit up, bathing baby and even using as baby wipes.
  • Towels: We love the hooded ones for baths to keep baby warm by covering the head.
  • Waterproof changing pads: Get a bunch…they definitely come in handy. I keep one downstairs, one upstairs, one for travel and extras when they need washing.
  • Crib sheets: Have a few on hand for possible accidents. Don’t forget bassinet sheets too, if you’re using one.
  • Crib blankets: Avoid any that are particularly large or heavy to minimize SIDs risk.

Just a few items baby will need when he or she comes into this great world.

Traitor Movie Review – Don Cheadle

Traitor MovieTraitor is the story of American Muslim and former U.S. Army explosives expert, Samir Horn (Don Cheadle) who is suddenly under the scrutiny of the FBI for possible involvement in overseas terrorist bombings.

As you learn quickly (I’m not spoiling anything with this), Cheadle is actually selling explosives, but to this point, doesn’t appear to be directly involved in any bombings. That is, until he ends up in a Yemen prison and hooks up with Omar (Said Taghamoui). He starts working with Omar and a terrorist group in their bombing of the American Consulate in Nice.

Cheadle is under the scrutiny of two FBI Agents, Roy Clayton (Guy Pearce) and Max Archer (Neal McDonough). Their good cop / bad cop routine is a little nauseating, but the story still does manage to move along.

There are no big twists and turns in this movie. I think we’re supposed to be surprised by the big revelation that comes near to the end, but it was quite predictable. Still, it was a decent movie worth watching…but maybe wait for DVD.

Newborn Baby Self-Care (Err…Mommy Care) Items

Baby Bath
Even though they can’t care for themselves, newborns do need a their own collection of self-care items to ensure they’re happy and healthy.

Here are the basics of what you need:

  • Baby bath/soap
  • Tear-Free Shampoo
  • Moisturizer
  • Diaper rash cream
  • Vaseline / petroleum jelly
  • Wipes (disposable or washable)
  • Manicure set: scissors and clippers
  • Baby powder and baby oil are optional: If you use powder, ensure it’s cornstarch based, instead of talc. Oil is sometimes recommended for cradle cap.
