Baby Borrowers Review - Does Nobody Care about These Babies?

If the title of the show doesn’t turn you off…then watching it will. Baby Borrowers is a reality t.v. series that takes teens who claim that they want to have kids..now, or when they are very young, think that raising a child is no big deal and are willing to go on t.v. and prove it.
My issue with this show is that nobody seems to have the children’s emotions and safety in mind. The parents of the children are stationed in a room a few houses down from where they live and are able to “watch” what is going on with their children via nanny cams. First of all, the cameras can’t possibly capture “everything”, second, how quickly can you get to your child if they are injured or being abused if you are three houses away.
My last and final issue with this show is of the couple times that I’ve watched it, the children seem very distraught at being cared for by teens that are pretty much clueless or impatient, and who pays the price? The baby does. The parents seem to smirk and think it’s funny to laugh at the incompetence of the teens or they seem to get irate…um, they are teenagers, just out of babyhood themselves, what do you expect?
The teens often end up in tears but since they aren’t babies I don’t feel too bad for them (they at least signed up for the show, I’m sure the infants weren’t asked). Why not have a reality series that works alongside teens showing them how to care for an infant and then incrementally expose them to the full effect of raising a baby? Instead, the baby is thrust into their arms and the only guidance they receive is a fuming mother marching into the house and getting in their face about what they aren’t doing right.
I believe the original goal of the show was to demonstrate to teens how difficult parenting can be and it is easier if you are a bit older, wiser, more financially stable, etc. but part of me gets the message that the goal is to have them never want children. I could hardly blame them for being left with that impression when they are being set up to fail.
And who’s caught in the middle? The babies. They can’t voice their opinion and make a responsible decision, that’s what their parents are for…hopefully that message will come through on the nanny cam that little Johnny’s dad is watching down the street.
