CORRECTION: There was a typo in my comment above. That sentence near the end should have read: "So she got the surgery that she SHOULDN'T have had because it could kill her, and it killed her." Sorry about that.

Just watched the show. I feel a ton of sympathy for the kids, who seem like really good kids, and I do feel some sympathy for Renee, because there are serious psychological issues that factor into becoming so obese. That said, personal responsibility does come into play here. She was 550 pounds -- SMO, as they say -- before this car accident. And she was only 26 then. So she was in atrocious condition long before the car accident. Those are life choices. She chose the comfort of food and a sedentary lifestyle and was super morbidly obese at a young age completely REGARDLESS of the accident. Post-accident: Of course I understand that she's not going to be able to exercise at that state, but it doesn't explain adding on another 350 POUNDS. That's like adding more than TWO average-sized women to your already 550-pound body! Gastric bypass was NOT the only option for her -- it was just the "miracle cure" she'd conceived in her deep-denial mind. There are numerous dietary ways she could have lost several hundred pounds before surgery, making the risks much smaller. Instead, she pushed and pushed and pushed for the surgery, even when doctors refused and told her she needed to drop weight first. So she got the surgery that she should have had because it could kill her, and it killed her. Case closed. Do I feel bad for her? Yes. And I especially feel bad for her kids. But Renee wasn't stupid. She was an intelligent woman who chose not to act intelligently. She chose to be in denial about her personal state, she made some incredibly risky decisions, and not surprisingly, those decisions killed her.

If Renee put as much effort into nutrition and eating properly as she did trying to convince people to perform a free high risk medical procedure she would still be alive today. People just don't want to take repsponsibility for themselves. That she felt a sense of entitlement was obvious watching her on teh TLC program. She clearly felt that someone else was supposed to provide the results for her with no work required from herself. I am genuinely sorry for her children and for the situation as a whole, but it really irks me that people in Renee's situation are always saying "My only choices are surgery or die". No! You can also choose proper nutrition and exercise, even if you are bedridden and only have one good leg.
Besides - who was the one preparing her food? They had a part in this tragedy too.

I always throw a New Years party with both adults and their children, although some of the younger ones often fall asleep early. I love the idea of creating a time capsule and might have a go this year.

What a great post. I think many of us are thinking of more practical things to give for Christmas this year, as many people are out of work and cannot afford the necessities.

And I love the gift card idea so that they can buy what they really need, instead of buying a gift just to buy something.

Daisy Fuentes hair care is the BEST! By far, the best line of products I've ever tried. My hair which is color-treated, has never been in such great condition. The prices are great and very little conditioner is actually needed. Exceptional value for amazing products. Daisy sold me when I read the label--no sulfates and is cruelty free. Now, I am recommending to everyone.

I just saw the program, and your facts were a bit off...they might change your opinion perhaps? The first mother, the younger, went into labor and they took her babies by caesarian as is common for multiples, let alone older mothers. The next day, the other mother went for an exam and she was found to have high and fluctuating blood pressure, a dangerous condition. So her doctors decided to take her babies immediately for her sake. Also she'd gone into some labor. During the show, the two women spoke often jokingly about who would deliver first. There was no plan for a same birthday. In fact, the second mother expressed sadness that she couldn't wait until her spouse could be with her at the hospital.
