Review: Garnier Fructis Style Hairspray

Ever since I developed my new hairstyle, I’ve had to switch products.  Now I’m back to the smoothing, straightening line of things.  Since I don’t have the funds to buy my normal salon products, I’m getting by with store brands (yes, pity me).  I found a hairspray that smells wonderful and puts the stickiness level of Aqua Net to shame.  This is like superglue in a can!

In my case, this is a good thing, I need the stiff hold to keep my normally curly hair on lockdown.  This is doubling great as a root lifter as well…I just spray a little on and aim the blowdryer at it, stiffens up immediately and then I can tease it into the shape I want afterwards.

My local rite aid had Garnier products on sale two for $6.00.  The hairspray comes in a 8.25 Oz. can and I think that is a pretty sweet deal.  I don’t know if the price and quality is enough to keep me committed long term, but it is definitely a keeper in the interim.

Valentine's Day for Kids: Fun Party Ideas

Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to have a party and the kids are going to love it. Invite family and friends to share the day with you at your home. When a party is on the agenda, everyone can contribute ideas to make it fun…it doesn’t matter what age they are, whether they have a significant other or not. It’s a kid’s party – so just have fun!

Plan ahead. To avoid a rush, gather all of the party supplies a week in advance. Let everyone brainstorm ideas until the big shopping day arrives. With list in hand, find games and items for everyone.

Dress each guest to celebrate at the party. For the girls, give them a candy necklace. Once the party is over, she can nibble at her necklace for a sweet treat. For the boys, try candy whistles. It’ll be the most delicious sound they’ve ever made.

Start with some games. How about a game of hearts for the card players in the group? Go online and Google card games to find a simple version of the game for kids and adults to play at parties.

Word games are fun at a party. Using the words, Happy Valentine’s Day, give kids two or three minutes to write down as many words as they can using those letters. The one with the most words wins a prize.

Prizes for games can be as simple as paper hearts that function as coupons. For example, create a coupon that can be traded in for a day with no chores or a five dollar gift from the store. The more prizes a person wins, the more coupons they can cash in. If you have invited people outside the family, have a separate prize basket with small prizes like teddy bears and candy.

Teach a craft. Kids love to make things so give them an opportunity to learn something new. Since spring comes right on the heels of winter, show them how to plant seeds in a flower pot. They can start their own herb garden that will grow indoors. Decorate the pots with hearts so kids will always remember the fun they had on Valentine’s Day.

If the weather is nice, the kids can take turns whacking a Valentine’s Day piñata. The piñata can be a cupid, a heart, or something else related to Valentine’s Day. Each child gets three chances to bust it open. After that, the older party guests get a crack at it.

Even if it is just the family, a Valentine’s Day party can bring lots of laughs and quality together time. Encourage old and young alike to participate for the most fun.

Teach Your Baby Sign Language and Find out why She's Crying!

by Gillie Saane

Baby is crying and you’ve done everything! Diaper is dry. She’s not hungry. Aaacckkk!!! Why is your baby crying? If only she could talk to you. That’s silly. Babies don’t talk. They don’t? Sure they do. Babies talk all the time. They just don’t talk in English.

When your baby is screaming at the top of her lungs, her face blue from lack of oxygen intake, and her eyes are bulging out like one of the muppets, you think, just maybe, it’s because she’s trying to tell you something? Good guess. Her tears are from utter frustration because even though she’s making more noise than a rock concert, she thinks you can’t hear her! If you were listening you’d help her!

Ah. What we have here is a basic failure to communicate. Two entirely different languages are being spoken here, and you don’t happen to have a U.N. interpreter. You speak English and your baby speaks Bbbfflltt!

What if you could speak to her in a language she understands — and she could talk back in that same language? Why not teach your baby sign language?

Teach my baby sign language? Now there’s a bright idea. Okay. Let me see, maybe I can squeeze it in between her chemical engineering class and her opera lesson. Thanks for the advice, and I’ll see ya later.

Hold on there, mom of the year. Wendy Jensen says — Yes! Yes you can teach your baby sign language! She knows because she’s done it (well, she taught her babies, not yours). And she’s taught other parents (successfully, by the way) to teach their babies, too.

Well of course you’re skeptical — but I’m telling you that she did it. In fact not just Wendy, but thousands of other moms out there. And these weren’t Harvard graduates we’re talking about. In fact, many of them didn’t even graduate Cal State Fullerton (or even attend any school in the Cal State system). Truth be known, they aren’t any brighter than any other of the mommies out there. And probably nowhere near as bright as you. (You’re reading this, aren’t you? Smart girl!)

Okay. Now if that weren’t enough, there are still MORE benefits from teaching your baby sign language.

Here’s the first BIG benefit. From now on, little Gretchen will no longer have to scream at the top of her lungs because she wants you to know her toe, on the foot which she just removed from her mouth, hurts like heck because she just bit it with her new tooth. Now she can let you know in signs!

And hold on there, mama, there are side benefits, too. Long lasting ones.

Young kids develop better language skills when they have learned sign language as a baby. Kids don’t have to have hearing impairment to be helped. They are helped because they learn to communicate better. They will be much more interested in the world around them. Now who would have guessed that? But it’s true.

It works out this way, perhaps, for the following reasons:

All little kids are mimics. Little girls want to wear lipstick and little boys want to shave (we hope for your sake it is not the other way around). When a child learns sign language they begin mimicking their parents at an earlier age. So they start younger doing adult things.

And If you are going to be a mimic, first you have to be a quick-study. You can’t dance like Britney without first watching (studying) Britney dance. Pretty logical. Therefore, signing develops attention skills. Kids study the person signing in order to “hear and understand” This keeps kids focused and their little mushy brains working full speed to keep up. And they love it!

Teaching your kids sign language is fun. Kids think they are playing an action game (side point: kids love action games!) because signing takes action.

Now just imagine this from your little moppet’s point of view: instead of mom and dad telling her to shush (kids hate to shush), or dumping her back in the play pen, (kids hate to be dumped back in the play pen) her parents are giving her a whole bunch of positive attention!

Will your little darling get a full paid scholastic scholarship to Columbia if you teach her sign language. Probably. Well, actually, maybe. Anyway, she will be heads and knees above the other kids because you provided her with a very basic skill set. And you taught her that learning can be fun. Give a baby a fish and she eats tonight. Teach your baby to fish and she eats for a lifetime. Get it? It’s simple. Teach your baby sign language and she will benefit for her whole life.

Wearing Your Baby is Healthy for Both Baby and Mom

by Katie Wilber

No doubt about it, babies love to be held. Unfortunately arms get tired and as busy parents know, arms have things to do. That means holding your baby all day long is a near impossibility. Or is it? Baby wearing was designed to not only give babies the attention and security they crave, it also gives parents the freedom they need.

Baby Wearing Defined

Baby wearing is the practice of wearing or carrying a baby in a carrier ” most often a sling. Baby wearing is part of the attachment parenting philosophy which believes that a strong emotional bond with parents during childhood is a precursor of secure, empathic relationships in adulthood. While baby wearing is a factor in the attachment parenting philosophy, parents don’t have to adopt the philosophy to practice or receive the benefits of baby wearing.

Baby Wearing Benefits

Less crying. Science has proven that babies who are held cry less. That’s not just a benefit for busy parents; it’s a benefit for babies. Their needs are met and they’re happier.

The world is an open book. Babies who are worn learn more about the world at a younger age. When they feel safe and secure being held close to their parents, they feel more at ease pay attention to the world around them.

Multi-tasking. Baby wearing is the single best way to keep your baby safe and secure in your arms while at the same time being able to take care of all those daily tasks which require both hands.

Safe sleeping position and less risk of misshapen heads. Wearing your baby provides them a safe sleeping position, much like the pediatric association recommended position, which helps prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. However unlike sleeping on their back, the recommended position, sleeping in a baby carrier doesn’t put pressure on the back of their soft heads. The result is a baby who is much less likely to develop that telltale flat spot on the back of their head.

Mothers are less likely to suffer from postpartum depression. It is theorized that contact with the baby increases a mothers progesterone levels. This increase strengthens the bond between mother and baby.

Baby wearing moms are afforded private and comfortable breastfeeding whenever and wherever Babies often need to be fed in the most inconvenient of times and places. A baby carrier or sling enables the mother to feed their baby with all the comfort and privacy they need. Additionally, the job can be accomplished hands free.

Not all baby wearers are created equal. Make sure the baby carrier or sling you invest in is a safe one which allows for proper support and positioning. Used correctly a baby wearer provides busy parents the ability to both bond with their baby as well as get things done and babies grow up feeling safe and secure.

What Triggers Insomnia and How To Stop It

by Rose K Taylor

Insomnia is not an uncommon sleep problem. Approximately 40-50 percent of the population has experienced short and long term insomnia at one time or another. It can be quite inconvenient but knowing the causes of insomnia can help you in diagnosing if you have the condition or not.

Short-term, or transient insomnia, has many causes. Over time, eliminating (if you can) or decreasing the factors influencing your insomnia can lower its occurrence. It takes some self-discipline to change the environmental factors and personal habits contributing to transient insomnia.

Caffeine is good during the day but not at bedtime. It is found in beverages like coffee, energy drinks, and soft drinks. It is a stimulant that keeps you from falling asleep.

Although alcohol may help you fall asleep, it can be a contributor to insomnia. It interrupts your sleep cycle causing you to wake prematurely and preventing you from a full night’s sleep.

It has been found that smokers take longer to fall asleep than non-smokers due to the nicotine (a stimulant) present in their bodies.

Unwanted lights or noise may be keeping you from falling asleep or staying asleep. Close your windows, blinds, and doors, and use an eye mask and/or a white noise machine for better sleep.

Stress from work, family, financial, or social situations contributes to short-term insomnia. It is best to work through these issues with support from loved ones or licensed therapists so you can move on and regain lost sleep.

Traveling for business or pleasure and disturbing your usual sleep routine will disrupt sleep. If traveling is frequently required try to establish a way to continue your regular routine while away from home.

Long-term, or chronic insomnia, is caused by:

Breathing issues contribute to sleep disturbances. Sleep apnea is one of those conditions that make getting good sleep difficult. The condition is characterized by cessation of breathing several times a night. If you are sleep apneic, see a doctor right away.

Some causes are beyond our control. Conditions such as Restless Leg Syndrome cause the muscles in the legs to move all night as if they were being stimulated. Without treatment, insomnia results.

Issues that cause emotional distress contribute to long term insomnia. Disorders like depression and anxiety fall in this category. You may require medical professionals to deal with these conditions.

Insomnia is a condition that can be reversed with treatment. Before trying other methods, look for natural ways to deal with the problem.

Key Steps to Applying Mineral Makeup

by Marilyn Etzel

Mineral makeup is an answer to the age old question of how to look natural when wearing makeup. Made of finely ground natural minerals, there is nothing that gives a more natural appearance than mineral makeup. And, it’s safe to use on most all skin tones and types.

Mineral cosmetics contain minerals that are found naturally in the earth. You will encounter some mineral cosmetics that do include fillers. What types of ingredients do you want to see in your mineral makeup? Whether you choose to use or not to use mineral cosmetics with “extras” is up to you.

For a start, any makeup can have the appearance of caking if not applied correctly, even mineral makeup. Clumps and creases aren’t compatible with an evening on the town. There is a technique to applying all mineral makeup products: foundation, eye shadow, blush, and concealer.

Foundation does just what the name implies: It lays the foundation for applying all the other products. Using foundation first brings out the true colors in the makeup. Without foundation, the colors don’t stand out and any skin problems are still noticeable. Think of a painter’s canvas. Foundation prepares the face as priming prepares the canvas.

Prepare your face. Clean your face as usual. If your skin is dry, add a bit of moisturizer. Allow the moisturizer to soak into the skin before applying any foundation. A wet face will cause the minerals to clump together on your face.

There are two ways to prepare mineral makeup foundation-dry or wet. We’ll begin with step-by-step instructions for using a dry foundation.

Applying Dry Mineral Foundation

1. When opening a new jar of mineral foundation, shake it gently to loosen the minerals. Dump a small amount of the foundation on a clean surface like the jar’s lid.

2. Kabuki brushes are the traditional applicators for mineral foundation. The bristles of the brush hold the powder well and spread it easily over your face. Much is not required for a daily use. Dip the brush into the powder. Before applying, tap the Kabuki brush against the jar to dislodge any extra.

3. Apply mineral foundation from jaw line to forehead in a circular manner. When it comes to your nose, brush downward on the nose and out across the cheeks. Apply in strokes under the chin and along the neck.

4. Move over the face again with your Kabuki brush until you are satisfied with the coverage.

Applying Wet Mineral Makeup

1. Some women like using a liquid foundation instead. That’s okay. Mineral makeup is adaptable for this purpose. Just like with dry foundation, dump a small amount (about the size of a dime) of the foundation onto a clean surface like the lid of the jar.

2. Using a spray bottle filled with water, squirt a few drops of water onto the foundation. Mix the two together using a Kabuki brush. Application can start when the mixture reaches the right consistency for you.

3. Apply in circular strokes to your jaw line. Don’t neglect your neck and under the chin. For the middle of the face, apply to the eyelids, go down the nose, and come out across the cheeks. Because the foundation is wet, it may take more strokes to achieve even coverage.

Mineral foundation is easy to apply with the proper tools and techniques. Just follow the steps above and enhance that natural glow.

Bump It Hair Volumizer

Admit it…you want to try it out…you’ve seen the hokey commercial exclaiming “Bump It Up!”  Let’s talk about what “Bump It” does for you…it gives you that extra volume and height at the crown of your head (think Paris Hilton pony tail) without all the teasing of the hair or root lifters, etc.  It’s a plastic insert that you place at the crown of your head, with gripper teeth.  Then you place the next layer of hair over the gripper teeth (the bump it).  This creates a faux bump and nobody is the wiser.

I am dying to try it.  The price isn’t too shabby either, just $19.99 for a 4-pack (two large and two small bump its).

There is a second part to this bump it line…the Hollywood bump it…now this would REALLY make you look like Paris Hilton.  I’m not sure I would even wear it in public unless it was for a prom, wedding, etc. because it is quite dramatic, kind of reminds me of the misshapen heads on Star Trek.  So this is a bigger bump for the same price.  For the money, I would try the normal bump it first and see how much you love or hate it, then indulge with the Hollywood Bump It.

I am wondering if this is the replacement gadget for the tap teaser, remember that tool? You just tap tap tap your way to extra volume? Now you can’t find it anywhere.  We’ll see if this new Bump It will stand the test of time or end up in infomercial heaven.

Valentine's Day Kids Crafts – Fun Ideas for Everyone

Kids love to create crafts and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Construction paper is a useful tool for making Valentine’s Day crafts that kids will enjoy creating and family members will enjoy receiving, so let’s have some fun!

Start with a pad of construction paper. Make sure that you have a pad of white sheets, red sheets, and multicolored paper. The local office supply or craft store should have just what you need for the job.

The obvious first project is paper hearts. Kids can use safety scissors to cut out heart tracings. They can draw big and small hearts out of red and white sheets of construction paper. What I like to call alligator teeth scissors can be used to cut out some of the hearts and give them a unique edged design.

Red, white, and pink are the usual colors of Valentine’s Day but don’t object if the kids want to use other colors as well. They are being creative and creativity should be encouraged. A purple or green heart will be made with just as much love as a red one.

Kids can use large stencils to make letters that spell out Happy Valentine’s Day. Each letter is made out of construction paper and can be any color that the kids wish it to be. When they are done cutting out the letters they can glue them to a string of yarn and make a banner. Add a little glitter or stickers to make the letters stand out even more. You can display their handiwork in a doorway or on the living room wall.

What else can kids use construction paper for? They can decorate other items for Valentine’s Day. Adding a few tiny pieces of red or pink construction paper to a vase or picture frame can turn it into a special gift with a love theme.

Construction paper along with some love stamps can create feel-good buttons for the entire family to wear for Valentine’s Day. The kids can stamp to their hearts content and then cut out shapes around the designs to give to family and classmates. A piece of rolled tape or a small safety pin can fix the “love button” to any shirt or jacket.

Construction paper doesn’t cost much and it is a wonderful way for kids to have fun at Valentine’s Day. With simple items found around the house like construction paper, crayons, markers and scissors, crafts are easy to make at a moment’s notice.

Paint Ideas For the Nursery: Get Creative with Baby's New Home

Paint is perfect for giving a bedroom a makeover for a new baby. One advantage of using paint to create your chosen look for the nursery is that it can be changed easily and economically. Not only do babies grow remarkably fast but both you and the baby may fancy a change after a while.

Color Schemes:

Whether you opt for a traditional nursery look, with wooden furnishings or a cottage feel, or contemporary clean lines, you will need to select a complementary color scheme. Vibrant primary colors are well-suited to a contemporary-style nursery but can also offset dark wood furniture. Pastel colors – pale blues, pinks and yellows – create a calm, fresh atmosphere that adds lightness to a nursery with old-style furnishings. Perhaps you have an heirloom for the nursery: a quilt, a toy chest or a picture. You could pick out colors from these items as the basis of your nursery color scheme.

Though visual environments have emotional effects, your baby will not be spending all his or her time in the nursery and it will not be the sole source of visual stimulation. Choose a color scheme and design that appeals to you. When catering for your baby’s needs avoid detailed designs, such as fabrics in small print. Visual features that are large, bold and high contrast are more likely to engage your baby.

Creating Visual Interest

Adding murals or borders and using color for accent will help you create the perfect nursery for your baby. If you doubt your artistic skills, stencils are the answer. They’ve come a long way and you’ll find a wide range of motifs and designs to choose from. Some can be resized on request and they can be used again and again.

Stencils can be used on walls and furnishings and even floors in a room without carpeting. Repetition of a motif on different surfaces can help create a coordinated look. Numbers, letters of the alphabet and other friezes will provide visual interest for a nursery and will have educational value as your baby grows.

Although a large-scale mural may demand more artistic ability, it can be the focal point of your dream nursery. Since paint can be painted over easily, it avoids the problem of removing stickers or wallpaper down the line. Characters from children’s books are not that difficult to copy and are an alternative to hanging pictures.

Babies like things that move and change and are entranced by things as simple as the play of light. You can paint directly on to window glass with special stained glass paint, with scintillating effects.

Miscellaneous Tips

- Because a nursery is a bedroom it shouldn’t be too bright and busy. Walls, curtains and furniture all emblazoned with images and color can be too much.

- Adding accents can be as effective as giving all the walls a makeover. Color can be added to wooden fittings, including doors, windows, shelving and pelmets. Door and window surrounds, and picture or mirror frames, are useful places to add color to create a coordinated appearance.

- It may seem obvious, but make sure the paints you use are non-toxic.

Common Concerns and Tips About Selling on eBay

All Products Aren’t Guaranteed To Make Money On eBay.
Once you get into the ‘buying to sell’ addiction, you may find yourself with blinders on.   Try to be open minded.  Let’s face it, some things are hit and miss.  Trends come and go. It’s all about staying on top of the game and striking while the desire is hot.  The ‘CUTE’ factor doesn’t always apply when you’re on the hunt to make money!
There have been consistent money makers on eBay.
For example, UGG Boots, Mammoth Crocs, boutique clothing, vintage items and collectibles.  Toy
Season always has a plethora of “Top Toy Lists” and “Hot Selling Toys” on eBay. There are timeless toys that you just can’t help but make money on – like LEGOs or My Little Pony.  New AND used items sell well and will only broaden your customer base.  Experience and research will help you determine what is best to turn a profit quickly.
Finding a deal can be a fabulous savings to your pocket book.
BUT finding a deal that you can profit from can give you an addiction like no other. :) By developing a well tuned eye, one will eventually be able to spot a money maker from across the room.
Finding Hot Items To Make A Profit From On eBay.
It can be a toss up of many online store searches, off season sales and many visits to discount stores, such as Marshall’s, Ross, TJMaxx, Kohl’s and popular stores in your area.  There are a few techniques used to purchase items that are particular to your area, thus making it hard to find and more desirable.  There ARE manufacturers that WILL cater to eBay sellers, however make sure the items you purchase aren’t already saturated on eBay.  It’s hard to purchase from the big time designers because they feel eBay sellers devalue their product.  Don’t get disheartened when you receive a rejection from a major clothing manufacturer on a much sought after brand.  The truth is most major manufacturers will only sell to physical brick and mortar locations.
Some Key Tips That Will Get You Through Those Buying Boo-Boo’s (we all have
them!):

1) Just because it’s on sale doesn’t always mean it will sell well.  You may have a time or two when you’re giving something away at your cost or returning it.
2) It takes time, patience and trial & error to establish and maintain your reputation as a seller.  Throwing in the towel after a month or two isn’t the way to build yourself in business.
3) Something that is selling well for one person may not sell well for another.
4) Buying off season may require you to hold onto some merchandise a little longer, but still list it in your store as soon as you purchase.
Especially if you sell worldwide – You won’t sell it, if they don’t see it!
Don’t Use eBay As Your Only Source Of Income!
I’m not saying jump in to multiple streams all at once. When you’re just starting out on eBay it can be overwhelming.  Master one thing first, and when you’re comfortable with eBay, move on to broadening your income streams.
Some other alternatives:
1) Buying and/or selling on Craigslist. Craigslist is perfect for selling bigger items from around the house or hard to pack and ship items.  Some savvy sellers will buy off of Craigslist and sell on eBay or vice versa.
2) Consignment shops are a treasure trove of great money makers.  Seek out consignment shops in your area.
3) Hit the yard sales. You never know what you may find.
4) Start a blog to drive traffic to your eBay store.
5) Submit articles related to what you know and have experienced about eBay to article directories.
There are numerous ways to bring in some extra income while making a web presence.
Good Luck and Happy Selling!
