Faux Finish Mistakes: Avoid These When Painting

Faux painting is deceptively simple once you’ve got the hang of it. There are some basic errors that beginners often make that are worth noting if you want to achieve the results you’re dreaming of.

1. Good materials produce good results. Buy the right paints and brushes and make sure your painting surface is well prepared. Painting onto flat paint is almost a guarantee of failure.

Low gloss paints will give you a brighter finish than flat paint, which has a dulling effect on subsequent layers. The best base coat is satin or eggshell paint that dries slowly, giving you time to attend to any problems.

2. Forget fancy equipment. You don’t need it and you can find economical substitutes for specialist equipment. Buy quality paint and paintbrushes instead of splurging on gimmicks. As a paint palette try using ice cube trays. They have the added advantage of storing more paint. Almost any soft sponge will serve as an applicator and you don’t need to buy one from an art supply shop.

Don’t waste that paint! You can always stick it in the freezer rather than letting it harden. Another money-saving tip is to use dishwashing liquid for cleaning brushes. You can buy fancy cleaners but a grease-cutting dishwashing liquid works just fine with water-based paints and with stencil creams, which are partially oil-based.

3. Your results depend on the surface you start with. You must fill cracks and cavities before you start, but it doesn’t end there. You then need to sand it and seal it with a water-based sealant. To ensure sure that the patch job blends in with the surroundings you need to make sure it is the same colour. Use the original paint if you have it or, alternatively, you can tint the sealant using some acrylic paint of the appropriate color. Don’t cut corners on surface preparation – flaws will show through.

4. You know the saying: oil and water don’t mix. Remember that when painting or suffer the consequences. The resulting curdled slush is not pretty. In short, know your paints and read your labels. Latex paint may sound like it’s oil-based but it’s part-water.

5. Clean conditions help create a neat finish. This applies especially to your brushes, which need to be thoroughly cleaned. If you don’t clean them properly you may end up with streaky paint and strange colors. You don’t need specialist cleaners but just running brushes under the tap is not enough. Cleaning pads for children’s art brushes are available for much less than the professional version.

Paint is designed to spread and spread it will – on shoes and in many other ways too. If you’re working for a client, this is a sure way to ruin your reputation. Accidents do happen, but there are ways of dealing with them. Using water or chemical cleaners on carpets is not advisable, since at best it can spread the paint further. You can try trimming the stain with nail scissors when it has dried. If the worst comes to the worst, a product called Goof Off is a useful remedy.

7. Timing is all-important, especially when using glazes. The faster you can work the better, especially if the weather is hot. Defined areas of wall (or other surface) need to be painted in one go so that you don’t end up with wet and dry edges that affect the way the paint spreads. Eliminate tea and toilet breaks until the job is done to avoid problems.

7. You may not recognize your painting style, but everyone has their own unique technique. That’s why collaborative efforts don’t work. People can work together as long as they work on different layers or walls, not different sections of the same layer/wall. Your style can even change during a day: pre- and post-lunch. Plan your sessions and breaks to maximize uniformity in technique.

Pushing Daisies – Canceled

I am sure all have noticed this cancellation by now.  My heart grieves for the loss of not only a very entertaining show, but also the scenery.  The way the show is (was) filmed using very vivid colors – to match their vivid storylines, was just amazing and highly pleasing to the eye.  So much witty humor was interwoven into this show that I cannot believe it was canceled.

On the other hand, maybe it looked too cartoonish and not like a “real show”…with all of the drama and violence today, this show may have been too soft for many viewers.  Even the violence, murder, mayhem on the show, it was all delivered in a very artful colorful package.

I think the true standout character on this show, and my longtime favorite, was Chi McBride.  I loved Chi on Boston Public (also canceled!) and was so very glad to see him return to t.v.  Now sadly, he is gone again.  I am hoping he will pop up somewhere else as he never fails to create an endearing character with a lasting impression for me.  Now if the shows could make a lasting impression (or at least one large enough to not get canceled) then we could all celebrate.

Healthy & Beauty Benefits to Buying Mineral Makeup

Mineral makeup has really taken off in the past twenty years. At first, everyone was skeptical about a makeup that claimed to provide so many benefits in one jar. This article discusses some of the health and beauty benefits of wearing mineral makeup you might not have known.

Mineral makeup comes with claims that they work for all skin tones and skin types. The mineral makeup hides is supposed to hide imperfections and help women put forth their best face possibleand with the growing popularity of mineral makeup, it seems it’s doing just that.

Even though the powder looks much like other foundational makeup at first glance, a deeper look reveals that mineral makeup is quite different from the run of the mill makeup we are used to putting on. Mineral makeup is made up of just that-minerals and not filler.

The basic minerals found in most mineral makeup consist of:

Mica powder Iron oxides (adds color) Titanium dioxide

Most cosmetics contain dyes for color and fillers to increase shelf life. The minerals used in mineral makeup are naturally occurring ones that have been ground into a powder for application. Using natural products helps to lessen the occurrence of skin irritations or problems caused by makeup that clogs the pores.

Furthermore, most makeup cakes after prolonged wear. Many foundations show streaks when we become overheated and begin to perspire. No one wants to have their makeup run. When it cakes, it is easier to see fine lines and wrinkles in our skin. What a mess!

Eliminate that issue by changing to mineral makeup. You don’t have to rub it in as with a liquid foundation. A Kabuki brush is all you need to sweep a small amount of the mineral powder to your entire face. Don’t worry about perspiration. The minerals settle in better when skin is warm.

Mineral makeup has several benefits:

It provides complete and light coverage Hides fine lines and wrinkles Goes on smooth and stays smooth even on hot days Provides shades that complement any skin tone Adds a natural glow to the skin

If you have allergies and have never worn makeup, mineral cosmetics can help you too. With no chemicals or fillers, skin isn’t exposed to potentially irritation substances. Some ingredients like zinc oxide and iron oxide provide some protection against the sun’s harmful rays. These products are also listed in sunscreen formulations.

Have you ever kept makeup for a long time and wondered if you should still use it? Makeup can become contaminated from continued use with the same brushes. Mineral makeup resists bacterial buildup so you can keep it for a long time without worrying about the powder getting old. For those with sensitive skin, skin disorders, or who just have trouble finding a shade to fit your skin tone, mineral makeup is a viable option.

Buying Online: Shopping for Kid's Clothing

Shopping online for your children can be a little tricky. You cannot touch the items nor can you shake the hand of the manager or store owner and make a personal connection. Without this tangible buying experience, some shoppers are left with many questions.

On top of the questions about fit and quality, shipping, returns, and the security of our transactions top the list of concerns. Here are a few tips and strategies for making online shopping for children’s clothing a stress free process.

Verify The Reputation Of The Store First!

Quick, before you being shopping on a site, check the URL – that’s the website address. Does it say HTTP or HTTPS? If there is no S, then the site isn’t secure. Find another store.

Online feedback and reviews are a great source of information. Because people are more likely to post bad reviews than good, it’s fair to assume that no news is good news. That is, if you cannot find any bad reviews then it’s probably an okay place to shop provided you’ve taken the other steps presented here.

Check expert resources, like the Better Business Bureau, for information.

What brands does the store carry? Are they brands with a reputation for quality? Are they brands or designers you’re familiar with? If not, do a quick bit of research to find out the reliability of the designers and brands the store carried.

Read The Product Descriptions Closely

Look for detailed product descriptions. This can include not only what the clothing is made of but where the clothing was made, how it is sized, the available colors, and even washing instructions.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Websites that allow you to enlarge or zoom in on photos are especially helpful.

Be Aware Of Store Policies

Before you hit “PAY” it’s important to know what you’re getting into. How long will it take to ship to you, for example, is an important consideration.

What are the return policies? A liberal return policy makes it much easier to shop online. A standard policy will give you 30 days provided the tags are still attached to the item and you have proof of purchase, but you may have to pay for return shipping.

What Are Your Child’s Measurements?

Knowing your child’s size is important however knowing their measurements will be an extra benefit. Because sizes vary, knowing their measurements can help you determine the right size for your child for any particular brand or item.

Share the wealth. Tell others about your online shopping experiences. If you have a bad experience by all means post a review however don’t forget to post a good review when you have a good experience. Good reviews help as much as the bad ones and they ensure the stores you love stay in business.

Review: Spinlash

What you get? A wand that spins and a tube of mascara.  Not only is it sold online and on t.v., you can also buy it at Target (about $12-$16 depending on where you live).  The goal of Spinlash is to coat, curl, and separate your eyelashes all with one gadget.  It claims that there is no clumping involved.  It comes in black or brown-black.  My friend Cindy purchased this online and tried one tube, I watched her apply it and in general was extremely impressed.

The pluses: It really does separate the lashes nicely.  I would say it pushes the lashes up, not actually “curls” them.  The coverage you get is wonderful for the amount of effort you have to put in (you just stand there and hold the wand while the spinner does the work).  You can skip the eyeliner when using this mascara, with lashes that dramatic, eyeliner really seems like an option instead of a necessity.

The minuses: If you have the wand pointed the wrong way and it spins down instead of up, you will end up with a red watery eye and have to start over.  The product is only good fo 90 days, and by product, I mean the entire thing.  The batteries aren’t replaceable, the wand can’t be washed and reused and to me that is just so wasteful.  I understand that regular mascara gets tossed as well when you are done with it but for something that requires batteries and appears to be more like an electronic gadget than makeup, I would expect that you could do more than just toss it when you are done.

My bottom line, until Spinlash comes up with a way to reuse the battery operated spinning brush top, I won’t be purchasing this mascara.  I understand that it doesn’t make them worse than other manufactures of mascara, but if you are introducing a product as new and innovative, why not go all the way and make it more green friendly too?

Faux Finish Ideas: Get Creative with Faux Paint

We’ve been using paint to transform our worlds for over thirty thousand years. Faux painting uses the magic of paint to create fabulous illusions. Whether you want a stylish new look for walls, floors, doors, columns or cabinets, there’s a faux painting technique for the task.

Faux painting is a versatile art that can revitalize indoor and outdoor spaces. Whether you want a cosy, distressed look in an older house, the elegance of marble or the richness of old wood, faux painting can help you achieve it. As well as grainy wood and antique finishes, other effects such as patterned brickwork or an expensive leather look can be achieved using faux painting techniques.

Brick and Block Finishes

Raw brick is a popular look for use both indoors and out. You can add texture to a flat wall or turn dull concrete into attractive brickwork. With stencils and the right paint, it is a relatively simple task to add pattern and color to boring floors or paths. The illusion of brickwork visible behind peeling plaster is an amusing and visually effective way to create the impression of age and that antique ‘lived-in’ look.

Wood Finishes

Furniture and household features such as doors, window frames and fireplaces can be given new looks with simulated wood finishes. This is an economical way to transform a plain door or item of furniture and the solution if you need to match new woodwork to existing fittings. Whether you are looking for the glossy look of old dark mahogany, the warmth of country pine or the clean, blond appearance of driftwood, faux painting can do the job. In most cases, the technique to master is known as ‘dragging’. Picture and mirror frames and other decorative items can be given the same treatment to create a co-ordinated effect in a room.

Faux Marble

Marble is synonymous with luxury and elegance. The real thing is expensive but the same effect has been simulated for centuries using paint. Marbled finishes are especially popular and effective in bathrooms and kitchens, making functional spaces opulent and eye-catching. The illusion is achieved by applying paint with a sponge, simulating veining with a fine brush and finishing with a high gloss sealer. A polished granite finish is one of many other faux stone effects that can be created with paint and a bit of practice.

More Designer Finishes

With the right materials and knowledge, a range of exotic and stylish finishes can be achieved using paint, including metallic finishes. Faux chrome details can complement contemporary homes, whereas faux bronze can add the finishing touch to a traditional room furnished with antiques.

A cosy, lived-in look that creates the illusion of age is achieved using clever color choices and techniques to add texture to surfaces. Tuscan finishes use earthy, ochre-like colors to give a warm, Mediterranean feel to a room. It is especially well-suited to informal living areas and kitchens with terracotta tile flooring, but can be adapted for any room. Rustic stenciled motifs applied as borders extend the Italian theme.

Faux painting allows you to coordinate dcor schemes and achieves a unified overall appearance. Antique and distressed finishes can help bring the look of a room together. New furniture and fittings can be given a glowing patina that makes them look as if they have been around for centuries. Textured finishes such as color washes can help achieve this visual effect. On furniture or doors, crackle glazes dry to look like antique varnishing.

Faux painting is an inexpensive and creative solution for many interior designs and a fun way to give your home and furnishings a makeover.

A Princess/Cinderella themed wedding is all about lots of magic and glitz. The first place you can create this is with your wedding invitations. There are many choices in Cinderella themed wedding invitations, such as castle, coach or even shoe shaped cards. How to Save Time Researching Items on eBay

Ever get sucked in by a $ale?! Do you ever wonder what you were thinking when you look at some of your eBay inventory?

Of Course!! It’s only natural to get drawn in by super huge discounts!

Admit it, we all have those buying boo-boos – beginners mistakes, newbie no-nos…whatever you want to call it!

The fact is NOT everything will sell on eBay just because it’s a good sale item. Don’t buy something for resale because you don’t see what you really want and feel like you have to buy something. Unfortunately a lot of people go through this and end up spending money on unwanted items. This only leads to returning to the store, wasting gas, postage and your precious time! There’s also the chance that, if it’s a final sale item, it may not be returnable and you’ll be stuck with it thereby losing money because you stick it up on eBay and take a loss and pay the fees. Or you bring it to a consignment shop and get half of what you originally paid.

These days, with technology as advanced as it is, a majority of us have cameras on our cell phones or Blackberry or even a small camera you carry with you. Eliminate unwanted trips back and forth to stores by taking pictures with your cell phone, email the pictures to yourself, look it up online, or call an eBay buddy!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Steps

Step One

Email yourself – Most cell phones come with some kind of ability to send email. It makes it easier to remember while you’re working at home. You can easily add it to your ‘to do’ list as soon as you read your quick reminder you’ve sent to yourself.

Step Two

Look it up online – If you’re really in a pinch and don’t have the Internet connected on your cell phone, you may have the option to get it on a day-by-day basis. Some cell phone carriers will offer a $2 a day Internet access or charge a fee based on data usage. This comes in handy when you aren’t in town, or really need to look up an item to see if it’s a hot one to pick up.

Step Three

Call an eBay buddy – We all know somebody who sells on eBay, don’t we?? Make a quick call to see if they’ll look something up for you. Better yet, alternate trips to the stores to save on gas and pick ‘eBay days’ that you can research for each other.

Hope this helps!

Finally! Wispy Bangs are Back!

And I am SO glad.  Having a very short forehead, I was sad to see hairstyles with bangs leave over the years.  This left me open to exposing my “two-head” rather than a forehead.  The most in the spotlight example of bangs being back “in” that I point to is Rihanna.

She has very sexy sideswept bangs, while not practical for normal officeworkers, a modified version of these bangs would be smart and sexy at the same time.

I was so convinced that I went today and got my hair cut again.  I was/am looking for something different.  I ended up with a shorter hairstyle that is long on the sides shorter in the back and stacked up.  I have wispy bangs that I can either wear in my face or I can clip back with my plethora of fashion barrettes.

At this shorter length and new texture, I can easily blow it out straight with my hairdryer and even use a straightener (with success!) on it.  Every time I stumble across something new that I love and works for me, I kick myself for not trying it sooner.  If you’re stuck in a haircut rut, break out and try something different!

Mark Wahlberg – Surprising

Sometimes, stars surprise you.  I was surprised, for example, to recently read what Mark Wahlberg said during an interview on a British talk show.  He was asked if he knew Tom Cruise.  Wahlberg responded humorously by saying “We attend different churches, I’m at the one with Jesus, baby!”.

I found this very surprising, Hollywood has never seemed to be too much of a fan of the Savior and I think there has always been a trend to “not go there” by stars for fear of facing ridicule from other celebrities and/or their fans.  I was glad to see Mark stand up for what he apparently believes in and do so with humor.

One, Christians DO have humor, two, it’s high time that actors and the like make more statements on where they stand, without fear of being attacked.

Particularly in hollywood where “tolerance” is preached left and right – as long as your beliefs aren’t contrary to theirs.  Often, when a non hollywood stance is taken, you will see tolerance vanish like a plate of krispy kremes after a weight watchers meeting.  Kudos to Mark for putting himself out there.
