Dealing with a difficult person is never easy or pleasant, but it needn’t become a shouting match or public display of temper, if handled with confidence and a cool head.
It doesn’t matter if you’re talking about a child, or a difficult client at work, the mechanics of dealing with their arguments or emotional responses is the same. Before facing the person, spend some time considering every angle of the situation that is bringing you together. Examine their side, and yours. Consider whether either view is too inflexible. Decide whether there will be allowances made, and if so, how much.
And realize, that in most situations, it’s not important that you be right. Just that you come to a resolution that can make both people happy.
When you have a firm grip on all aspects of the matter, you will have the confidence to deal with even the most difficult personality. Knowledge is power, and if you go into the confrontation secure in possessing all that you need to know, you’ll have the confidence to bring the meeting to a successful conclusion.
