Quick Health Tip: Keeping Anger in Check

Angry WomanAnger can be a destructive emotion. We tend to react in one of two ways, either turning it inside ourselves where it can build up, or we explode with inappropriate physical or verbal actions. Either way, this can be a source of great personal stress, and can frighten children who witness a
loud argument between parents, or at whom the anger may have been directed.

Learn to recognize the signs of anger that is building up inside you. Then separate yourself from the source. If a child is misbehaving, give them a time out, and then provide something for them to do afterwards, so you have time to cool off. If they are old enough, tell them “I am angry, and will talk to you later about it.” If the argument is with an adult, or you are simply becoming frustrated with a
task, put it down and walk away. Go for a walk. Sit outside and breathe fresh air. Take a relaxing bath. The original problem will not disappear, but you’ll be able to deal with it in a more rational and less heated manner.
