Save Time In The Kitchen With Some Preparation

If you find your family constantly as asking “what is for dinner?” and you feel like pulling your hair out then it is time for a change.  With a little preparation you can save a lot of time in the kitchen.  Two of the best tools you can have in the kitchen are a crockpot and a freezer.  I know you are thinking wow those are totally opposite tools but they really can compliment each other.

First you need to get a nice size crockpot for your family. I highly recommend the Rival 6.5 Quart Slow Cooker with Bonus Little Dipper Slow Cooker.  For a family the size of mine (five of us including three teen boys) the large crockpot is a must.  I also love that this one comes with a free bonus little dipper which is good for so many things including dips, sauces and even warming canning flats.

Think of your crockpot as a mini oven that cooks at a slower pace.  There are some great points to this like a tough cut of meat will tenderize with the slow cooking.  If you are a beginner to crockpot cooking or you just need some fresh ideas you definitely want to check out Crockpot Cooking Made Simple by Susanne Myers of HillbillyHousewife.com.  You can get a sampling of her crockpot recipes at her website but the cookbook is a much better compilation of her recipes and tips.

So at this point I suppose you are wondering how your freezer compliments your crockpot.  Well if you have one of those mornings where you can’t seem to get supper in the crockpot quick enough because one of the kids caused a crisis before school and work then you will be thankful when you have a crockpot meal awaiting in the freezer.  Just grab, toss in the crockpot and set to cook.  The smell will be wonderful when you arrive home from work and your evening will be a breeze.  Doesn’t that sound relaxing?

Susanne can help you with some freezer cooking ideas also.  Isn’t she just brilliant?  Check out her Freezer Cooking Made Simple ebook.  After learning what freezes well and how to appropriately preserve food for the freezer try to match what can cook easily in the crockpot.  You can now prepare and plan some emergency from the freezer to the crockpot meals.  It will be like having your own convenience foods without the preservatives and junky ingredients.

Make sure when you freeze your meals to put them in some appropriate containers to avoid freezer burn.  Buying some Ziploc Quart Freezer Bags in bulk might be the option for you if you have limited storage in your kitchen.  If you want to stay on the greener side go for Arrow Plastics 30 Piece Freezer Storage Container Set.  It stacks nicely and is a frugal option.

Using your crockpot and freezer can be a huge time saver in the kitchen.  Take time to learn how to get the most out of these kitchen appliances.

We All Need A Household Helper Sometimes

Home Organization for Busy Moms

Do you have those days where you almost want to quit being a mom? Maybe the house is falling apart or you forgot to pay a bill or missed an appointment. Today’s woman is so much busier than June Cleaver and the demands just never seem to end. Some of us need to learn how to say NO but many things can be helped by just having a system in place so things don’t get to the point of overwhelming.

I grew up in a home where my mother had a serious work related injury and couldn’t do many things around the home. I remember being resentful that at eleven I was attempting to keep the house and cook the meals. For my age I didn’t do too bad but I didn’t learn any systems other than let it go and catch up. As a mom that system just doesn’t work. At eleven as survival it was all I knew.

Being a mom to three teen aged boys I am attempting to teach things that my mom wasn’t able to teach during her time of illness. The following quote really caught my attention.

“Home Organization for Busy Moms by Cara Mirabella can make the words “organized busy mom” a reality for you.”

Doesn’t that statement in itself make you want to look further into Cara’s Guide to Home Organization!  Here is what you can expect to find in the book:

~Learn what it means to get organized and how to get started.
~Discover how to rid your life of clutter for good.
~How to stop kitchen chaos! Awesome organization tips for cupboards, drawers, and the fridge & freezer.
~How to quickly & easily get the family room under control.
~The A-B-C formula for tackling the bedroom & bathroom and discover the no lose way to organizing the home office, garage, car, and all those seasonal items too!

If you find yourself in a situation similar to mine then I want you to know there is help out there.  Just give it a chance.  If you find yourself needing a little more personalized help you might look into Personal Home Management Coaching from Cara.  She will help you find your areas of strengths and guide you in improving your weaknesses.  There is hope no need to remain overwhelmed anymore.

Maybe you don’t have kids headed back to school.  Don’t worry Lovable Labels has something special for you too! Wouldn’t some labels or stationery with your name be useful around the house as well?  A woman can always use a nice notepad to send out notes to those she loves.

Make Your Eyes Sparkle

Colorful Summer Rainbow EyeshadowMy husband has his class reunion this weekend and I am making an attempt to look a bit more like a woman and less like a mom for an evening.  The problem?  I feel a bit clueless as to how to make my makeup look modern.  I typically don a pair of yoga pants or capris and a t-shirt but I thought this would be a good opportunity to look feminine and pretty again.

I found a really dressy tank top trimmed in lace with a sweet black shrug while shopping the clearance racks but I still had to address my make up situation.  Being home most of the time I don’t wear makeup often.  I feel really out of the cosmetic loop.

After a little hunting I found Makeup Geek aka Marlena.  What do I love about Marlena?  She is a plus-sized gal not afraid to be beautiful and share her tips with the world.  She has video tutorials on everything from modern wedding look  to a fabulous bollywood look.  I am just looking to make my eyes sparkle a little and get past the mom look.

I haven’t selected a style yet but I have spent a lot of time watching videos.  Marlena has a store on her site selling the colors and products she recommends but with my limited time I did a little hunting for a store and found ULTA stores have most of the products needed to create the looks.  While I don’t have one locally I will be stopping at one during the trip to my husband’s hometown.

I love that the looks won’t break my budget.  Have fun, watch some videos and create a new look while getting out of the mom funk.

Enjoying the Stages of Motherhood

Through the past week I talked about the stages of motherhood and gave you some reading resources.  I divided the years up into four stages: Infants & Toddlers, Elementary Ages, Teenagers and College & Adult Children.

Each age group has it’s own challenges and I provided some good reading material resources for each group.  Also, during the time of raising our kids we go through different motherhood and marriage stages.  It is very important to remember we often teach by example and caring for ourselves is just as important as caring for our children.

Keep in mind that while there are hundreds of books out there your best resource is often another mom.

Get involved with a moms group, church, book club or any other place you might find a mom to connect with.  I have a friend who has already raised her children that gives me a listening ear and sound advice when I feel overwhelmed.

Most of all enjoy your children!

We are only given our children for a limited amount of time.  Raising them is a blessing although it can be difficult at times try to enjoy as much of it as possible.  Make yourself available to mentor a younger mom as you can be a gift to someone else as well.

What is your favorite resource for help with raising your children?  How have you coped with the demands of motherhood?

Stages of Motherhood: College to Adult Children

Over the past few days I have gone through the stages of motherhood with you including: Infants & Toddlers, Elementary Ages, Teenagers and now College to Adult Children.

A Child Leaving Home Doesn’t Mean You’re Not A Mother Anymore.

To some it make seem like a blessing that your child is leaving to others it may seem like the world is going to end.  As mothers our job is to raise our children and send them out into the world to make a way for themselves.  Just because they leave doesn’t mean we won’t ever be needed.  However the boundaries of telling our children what to do are getting finer.  Here are some resources to help you figure out those boundaries.

For those moms sending your child off to college 1001 Things Every College Student Needs to Know: (Like Buying Your Books Before Exams Start) gives a lot of advice for your new college student.  This book is going to share everything from housing advice to planning which classes to take and even how to develop great study habits.

Maybe your child decided to not attend college but you still want them to achieve everything that they possibly can.  You need to read Parenting Your Adult Child: How You Can Help Them Achieve Their Full Potential for some great tips.  Maybe your child just had decided to not grow up this is going to help you give them a push to get on their own feet.

Maybe your child just hit their 20′s and needs some help gauging maturity. Help Your Twentysomething Get a Life…And Get It Now: A Guide for Parents gives a lot of advice which is desperately needed by many parents.  You don’t need to enable or manipulate your child to take responsibility for themselves but you may need to give them a wake up call.

The kids are gone and now is a time for natural change. Loving Midlife Marriage: A Guide to Keeping Romance Alive From the Empty Nest Through Retirement is going to be a great resource for those moments when you don’t know how to adjust in your marriage.  Now is the time to recreate all those moments you dreamed about while the kids were growing up and you didn’t have the time or money to make them come true.  Take a breath and make a list so you can deepen your relationship.

Remember even though the kids are gone life hasn’t ended.  It won’t be long and you can spoil the grandchildren and then send them home.

Stages of Motherhood: Teenage Years

The past few days I have touched on resources for mothers with infants and toddlers and elementary aged children.  Today I want to talk about tweens and teens.

I really find the teen years the hardest but with good reason.

During the teen years your child is going to work really  hard to separate themselves from you as an individual.  Our job as parents is to instill values in them and provide guidance that will help them make the right choices in life.  We cannot as much as we want to make the choices for them.

Sometimes the hardest thing is knowing when to let them fail.

The first resource I want to share with you is Parenting Your Teen and Loving It: Being the Mom Your Kid Needs.  Just because our kids need to learn to stand on our feet does not leave us unneeded as a mother.  Sometimes we all need to understand just how much we are needed and where.

So now you know where you are needed but can you stay calm while going through the rough issues of your teen?  Getting to Calm: Cool-Headed Strategies for Parenting Tweens + Teens is going to give you the advice to slow down and remain in control.  Not necessarily in control of your child but in control of yourself and your reactions to  your child’s behavior that tests your limits.

So maybe you have a tween, not quite a teen but past the elementary age group. The Everything Tween Book is going to be the best resource you could have possibly found.  No matter the issue you are bound to find a standard limit in this book.  Think about makeup, fashion, dating and so much more.  We all have our own ideas but this gives us a place to start for setting limits.

While you may feel like you are going crazy with tweens and teens in the house the last thing  you want is a crazy marriage.  The next book Loving Your Man Without Losing Your Mind might save you when you feel like screaming at your husband for something little he might have done.  It isn’t hard to carry over the stress from the kids to your marriage but now more than ever when you teen starts to date they need to know how to treat the opposite sex.

Parenting isn’t over after the teens so come back for the next part in the series about college and adult aged children.

It won’t be long and you will be empty nesters but the need of a mom never goes away.

Stages of Motherhood: Elementary Ages

Yesterday I spoke about how wonderful and challenging it can be to have a new baby or toddler in your home.  Today I want to advance a few years and look at the elementary aged child.

Sending your child to school for the first time means you give up a little control.

It doesn’t need to mean you give up involvement or setting an example.  Maybe this isn’t the beginning of school but your child is heading for the tween years and has an early attitude of “I don’t need you” already.  There is help no need to fear!

Elementary Aged Children

Maybe you went overboard spoiling your young child and they have developed and attitude.  Maybe their behavior just doesn’t appear to have the respect behind it that you wish to see out of your child. Have a New Kid by Friday is the definite choice for you.  This book is going to help you speak to your child in a way that they understand that you are in charge of your household.  There will no longer be a need for an attitude when it doesn’t get your child any benefits.  Dr. Leman is humorous and easy to follow but he will challenge you to follow through.

The cover of this book really speaks for itself.  Sure enough your child is at an age where he or she doesn’t want to listen to you or maybe his or her friend just knows something you don’t. Parenting Isn’t for Cowards is a positive look at why you need to be firm and consistent with your children.  They are here to test your limits and without limits they will run wild.  Set limits and be  a courageous parent.

The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander is a look at how to prevent peer abuse of bullying.  Every child is picked on in school but teaching your child how to stand up for themselves and how to help others empowers them with a sense of strength.  Even though we may not want to admit it as parents our children can be cruel and our child may be the bully.  Teach them why it is wrong and how they can belong to a group without berating another person.

If you are not a single parent your kids are still watching your relationship and learning from your example.  As a mom you need to continue to care for your marriage to set that example. Pick up a copy of  How to Date Your Spouse for great date ideas to keep the spark alive.  Just because you have children doesn’t mean life as a married couple is over.  There is more than running to soccer games together.

Tomorrow I will continue the series with the tween to teen years.

This is an age group of much growth and trying times for many parents.  Still it is not hopeless time and can be highly enjoyable to watch our children grow into young adults.

Marissa Gives Drab Dresses New Life

Not many gals I know would turn down a new dress.  Really most of us moms just keep giving to the rest of the family and frequently think of everyone else.

If you have left yourself out of the clothing budget do I have a treat for you.

Marissa over at New Dress A Day has got to be one of the most creative females I have seen in a long time.  She is on a mission that a lot of us could learn from.  She hunts for clothes at vintage shops, flea markets and thrift stores.  Paying only $1 for a dress (most of which I wouldn’t be caught dead in) each day in order to re-purpose it.

I am sure she will win the heart of many Green bloggers and leave the frugal gals in awe.  I am all about clearance deals and coupons but Marissa has me beat by a long shot!

Check out some of her before and after pictures.

Marissa states she was “inspired by the movie Julie & Julia while in a creative-funk-crisis”.   Food doesn’t inspire her but as you can see clothing surely does!

I hope Marissa has inspired you to tap into your creative side.  May it be food, clothing or decorating I am sure you have something special to offer.  What leaves you feeling creative?

Moms Need to Relax

As moms most of us get overworked, overwhelmed and high strung from time to time.  Others may feel that way all the time.  Well it is time to relax and that doesn’t have to require a lot of energy or preparation.

Take a look at some of the great ideas other mom bloggers have:

Katy from Katy’s Daily Smack has some great ideas aimed at single moms but really they are good for all of us.   This is a nice variety of simple ideas. Check out “Solitude Ideas For Single Moms”.

Rachel over at Rachel’s Cottage House has an entire series on relaxation tips.  I think you could almost get lost in these ideas  Scrubs, facials, teeth whitening, Oh My! Get ready for some home pampering with Rachel.

Lisa at The Well Grounded Life has a true to reality post about losing track of yourself and creating a “me-time menu”.  I love the ideas she puts forth and you won’t want to miss  her post.  While it can be difficult to find me-time maybe we should all just schedule it and save the hassle.

Jill from Jill Savage has some great ideas for reducing stress with No-Cost Exercise.  Exercise is not only going to reduce immediate stress but will help your health and provide some long term stress reduction.  Give yourself the gift of good health while you reduce your stress level.

Just for fun I thought I would add myself to the list.  You can check out how to make an affordable Mini Home Spa over at My Red Apron.  I love this littl spa I created and I often hide away in the bathroom for awhile just to unwind.

I hope this gives you a few resources for the next time you want to scream “I need a mom moment”.  Don’t scream just take a few minutes and do something good for yourself.  Remember that old saying “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”.  Taking care of you will be rewarding for both you and your family.
