Is procrastination your best friend? Do you often say,” I am going to do _____. Or, tomorrow I will start __________?” This week, let’s talk about procrastination.
We all have the best intentions to exercise, clean our homes, and finally organize the closets. What happens between what we want to do and the necessary action to do what we Really want? Can anyone relate? We all have a list of the things that we want to accomplish to make our lives better. What stops us dead in our tracks from achieving what we start? Do you know? Well, I think that what stops us are limiting beliefs. A limiting belief is a thought process that tells us not now, just wait until they are in school or that you can do it tomorrow. I know that many of you are nodding your head in agreement with me.
Often, these beliefs stem from some programming that we may have heard early in our lives. It could have been your sibling who always poured the milk for you because you always spilled it. The belief becomes “I need the help of others to take care of what I need” or it could have been a teacher who advised you to change your major because you did not quite have the discipline for mathematics. Trust me, we all have a story. What do you remember others saying to you in your past that you might be playing out today?
What can we do about these limiting beliefs? The best thing we can do is to recognize that we all have them and become conscious of what they might be. The following exercise is great to help you identify your belief system and to create a new system message.
1. Take out a sheet of paper or journal and write down 5 things that you are procrastinating on.
2. Write down why you are procrastinating
3. Next, write down a small action that you can take right now to take action toward this item.
Challenge - Take action. The only way to change behavior is with a new behavior.
Acknowledging and creating an action to overcome these beliefs is an important step to moving forward. I look forward to your comments this week.
