Put Facebook To Work For You

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Facebook has been around for quite awhile now and has a reputation of being for the ‘college crowd’ but it can and should be used by entrepreneurs and career women to widen their circle of influence and spread the word about what they do and what they have to offer.

FacebookI started my facebook page awhile back but never did anything with it. Then recently I decided to give it some dedicated attention and set a goal to reach 100 friends.

The first decision I made was to fully resist the 1001 silly applications that clutter up a lot of Facebook profile pages. I don’t need mini posters of fluffy kittens or gifts of (pictures of) diamonds and chocolate on my page. That’s fine for the casual user but I want my profile to represent me well on a business level.

I choose my friends wisely. (You’re known by your friends aren’t you?) I accept friend requests from those who seem to be in my target market or share my niche. I ignore requests from those who just don’t seem to fit. This may cut into my numbers but it’s really more about quality and quantity.

I have been taking time to visit friend’s pages and writing on their ‘Wall’. I may comment on a picture they’ve posted or respond to a link that they shared. This invariably brings them back to my profile page to return the favor.

All of this activity is recorded on my and their profile pages for other passerby to see and this is what eventually grows my network.

I’ve created a page about my podcast and other Facebook users can become a ‘fan’ of that page and interact about it there. (You can create as many pages as you like - as well as groups.)

I met my goal of 100 friends within five days and now I’m standing at 138. I’m getting messages from new people in my Facebook inbox every day. Some personal, some requests to be on my podcast and a couple of really interesting requests to network.

All in all, I’m pleased with the results and encourage you to invest a bit of time and effort into your own Facebook profile page soon.
