Review: SingStar

Our 6-year-old recently received playstation’s “singstar” which is a karaoke type of a game that comes with two microphones (with chords, although they do sell them cordless, we later found out).  The game is awesome, it spans all musical genre, including her favorite, Hannah Montana.

You simply put the disc into the playstation and a screen pops up with the video to the song and the words.  If you have a playstation camera (we do) pointed at the person singing (our daughter) then it will periodically take video and pictures of the singer while they are “in action”…it provides hours of entertainment.

Like most videogames, it awards points based on accuracy of singing the song, pitch, clarity, tone, etc.  You can win “trophies” along the way that “unlock” songs.  If the songs aren’t to your liking, playstation has an online store you can access right through the game where you can purchase (for just $1.49 in most cases) songs that you’d like to sing.  It gives a preview of each song so you are certain of what you are downloading.

The other neat aspect of this game is that you can sing by yourself, together, as a duet with separate parts or even have “battles” with each other.  If you want to REALLY get involved with this game, you can videotape yourself and post your performance online with other players who can then rate you.  This is one videogame that is great fun for both children and adults.
