The short answer? Beyonce’ Knowles. She probably didn’t think about all of us folks out here that would be confused by the name change. I remember yeeeeears ago on MTV, they had an interview of Destiny’s Child and Beyonce’ reflected on how she would come out on stage and something would just “overcome” her and the other two group members nodded in agreement and said “Sasha”.
Apparently the joke turned into reality with her November album release. What with all the racket at my house, I didn’t even realize she had released a new album until I began hearing songs on the radio (over the racket in the backseat of the van). This led to the following discussion:
My Husband: Who’s singing that song? (song playing was “If I were a boy”)
Me: Sounds like Beyonce’
My Husband: No it doesn’t, it doesn’t even sound like her.
Me: What?!? It sounds just like her, whatever.
My Husband: Hang on, the DJ is saying who the singer is.
DJ on Radio: That was just Sasha Fish (what we heard over the racket).
My Husband and Me in unison: Who’s Sasha Fish?
Me: I’m going to google this Sasha Fish person.
Me: Oh look, it’s a white guy who’s a DJ, what’s he doing on the all black radio station? I thought I knew all of their DJ’s? Guess they hired somebody new.
My Husband: Why don’t you just google the lyrics or the song and find out who REALLY sings it, I don’t think it’s a guy singing it, that’s definitely the voice of a girl.
Me: Oh, ok, googling….omg, Beyonce is Sasha FIERCE, not FISH.
The fact that my redneck husband who only mildly pays attention to music was able to tell that her latest song didn’t sound like the same old dependable power singing Beyonce’ – kind of says it all for me. The bottom line, her tricky name change didn’t win her any stellar reviews for this new album. Out of five stars, most have rated it a two-star album. I think Beyonce’ should go back to being Beyonce’ and drop this Sasha character altogether.
