Breast FeedingYou’ve probably heard the phrase “breast milk is best” and may have some idea why. Here are some more reasons and some you may never have thought of before. Of course, every mom should make the decision that’s right for her and her baby, but here are some compelling reason to feed your baby breast milk.

  • It contains ingredients that simply cannot be duplicated by cow’s milk or created in a lab.
  • It’s the perfect food in that it changes to suits baby’s immediate need. Whether it’s in a single feeding, throughout the day or as baby gets old, breast milk adjust according to what your baby needs.
  • Some studies show, breastfed babies are less likely to develop asthma or eczema.
  • Breastfed babies generally experience more regularity than bottle fed, given the digestibility of breast milk.
  • Breastfed babies are less likely to be chubby as baby takes just what she needs, instead of the parents forcing pre-measured formula on baby.
  • It’s more easily digested than cow’s milk-based formula. No wonder - it’s what baby was meant to eat.
  • Makes it easier for your baby to absorb the needed nutrients.
  • Studies indicate that breastfed babies, on average, have a higher IQ than their bottlefed counterparts.
  • Less chance of diaper rash when only consuming breast milk.
  • Breastfeeding is actually simpler and easier once you get the hang of it. There’s nothing to prepare, wash or sterlize…just go ahead and feed baby when needed.
  • Includes antibodies to protect baby from illness.
  • It can make mother postpartum recovery faster as the uterus shrinks faster.
  • May protect mom from risk of uterine and ovarian cancer.
  • It’s FREE! Except for the possible need to buy nursing pads (buy the washable kind to save money and protect the environment) and vitamin D drops (if you doctor recommends them), there is no cost to breastfeeding.

If you’re a first time mom, breastfeeding can seem daunting, especially if you’re having trouble getting things just right with baby. If you are having difficulty, consider the benefits above and consult your local resources of La Leche League to help you become more comfortable. It’s well worth it.

Great article. Another lesser known fact: breastfeeding lowers a woman’s risk - and her baby’s risk - of breast cancer.
